Gem Appraisal Center of Peking University (PKUGAC), is a testing institute of Gems & Jewelry with independent legal entity, which was originally established based on Gems Identification Laboratory of geology department of Peking University. With the development, the center has increasingly enlarged its scale, widened its scope of business, and enhanced its reputation.
　　PKUGAC was the initial Gems & Jewelry testing institute to acquire the certificate of laboratory authorization of China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), and acquired the qualification certificate of Measurement Authentication of Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China in 1994. The center has the complete testing facilities and strong technical force, including some well-known experts in jewelry field and gems identifiers with high quality. There are 58 staffs in the center, including 10 staffs with senior title and 16 staffs with CGC certificate.
　　PKUGAC is an organization independently operating business activities, aiming at providing the society with excellent service of Gems & Jewelry Testing. The testing scope includes diamond, colorful gemstones(like ruby, sapphire, emerald, chrysoberyl, aquamarine, tourmaline, crystal, etc), jade(like jadeite, opal, nephrite, turquoise, lapis lazuli, blood-stone, etc ) , organic gemstones(pearl, amber, coral, etc), ink stone, ornamental stone, precious metal(gold, silver, platinum, etc). With many years’ continuous efforts, The center has won good reputation in society through providing a large number of fair and authoritative reports and solving many testing difficult problems.
　　PKUGAC also takes on the teaching and research job on gemology. At present, there are 4 levels of training courses for jewelry education & training: jewelry appreciation senior training class, graduate courses in jewelry direction of Peking University (in-service training and applying for master's degree in Beijing University) ,jewelry identifier training course of Peking University (PKUC), and jewelry interest-class course, in order to provide theoretical and practical training and learning opportunities for practitioners, lovers or other persons.
　　PKUGAC has successively done some research on some gemstone varieties, such as jadeite, nephrite, serpentine, turquoise, opal, lapis lazuli, agate, Tianhuang Stone, pearl, coral, amber and ink stone, etc, and published more than 80 papers, monograph and textbooks. PKUGAC Successively held the “International Symposium on Jade” in 2011 and the two session “Peking University jewelry and jade symposiums” in 2014 and 2017.
　　PKUGAC attaches great importance to exchanges and cooperation with gemstone experts from Russia, the United States, Japan, Hongkong China, and Taiwan China, and carries out extensive and in-depth academic exchanges, so as to improve the staffs’ testing level.
　　PKUGAC implements comprehensive quality management and strict testing procedures to ensure impartial, scientific, reliable and accurate testing results. In the future, PKUGAC will continue to endeavor to track testing technology development trends and focus on the development and application of new testing methods in order to continuously improve identification and management level.
